The legion of Arnie’s Army
Raramente un singolo golfista è stato in grado di segnare la storia di un torneo come Arnold Palmer con il Masters nei primi anni Sessanta. Nelle prime tre edizioni, poi, è stato protagonista assoluto. Nel 1960, grazie a due birdie conclusivi, supera di un colpo Ken Venturi e si aggiudica la vittoria. Solo una volta, prima di allora, il Masters era stato vinto grazie a un birdie all’ultima buca, ma mai grazie a due consecutivi. Nel 1961, in un testa a testa con Gary Player, crolla sul finale, e con un drammatico doppio bogey all’ultima buca regala la Giacca Verde al rivale. Stesso duello, stesso campo, un anno dopo: Player si presenta sul tee del par 3 della 16 con 2 colpi di vantaggio su Palmer e, quando la palla dell’americano termina nel rough oltre il green, si gira verso il caddie sicuro: «Abbiamo vinto!». Mai previsione fu più sbagliata. Palmer imbuca da fuori green per il birdie, (per intenderci: recentemente Player ha definito quell’approccio “quattro volte più difficile di quello imbucato da Tiger alla stessa buca nel 2005”). Infila poi un altro birdie da 8 metri alla 17 e aggancia Player in vetta. Nel playoff del lunedì, Palmer si laurea campione per la terza volta.
